Centre Co. election board says its 'too late' to file lawsuit challenging mail-in ballots
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — The "Battle of the Ballots" is heating up in Centre County, where close to 100 primary election ballots remain under review.
The county election board contends that the group challenging the validity of the ballots filed their court suit "too late."
In review, 95 mail-in ballots from April’s primary election were flagged with possible problems on how they were dated or not dated.
The county election board decided to include the ballots in the final count, but before they were certified, a court suit was filed, claiming the ballots shouldn't be counted due to the dating errors.
New coffee shop opening in downtown Johnstown
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — A new coffee shop called, "The Write Cup Coffee Shop" is coming to Gazebo Park in Johnstown soon.
Denise Urban, the owner of "The Write Cup Coffee Shop" said, "I was itching to open another coffee shop."
The name was inspired by Urban's love of writing, especially with typewriters.
"I bought one typewriter, and I was hooked," Urban said. "I plan to have numerous typewriters around that you can look at, maybe one or two you can actually use, and of course we'll be selling the best coffee.
New report says Freeh report "flawed"
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (WJAC) —
An internal report by seven Penn State trustees questions the findings of the 2012 Freeh Report and the methods used to draw its conclusions.
The document, officially titled, “Report to the Board of Trustees of the Pennsylvania State University on the Freeh Report’s flawed methodology and conclusions” was completed and presented to the full trustee board in the summer of 2018.
The seven trustees who commissioned the report said the full board decided to not make its findings public.
Teacher accused of sexually abusing 8 children
ANNE ARUNDEL COUUNTY, Md. — An Anne Arundel County elementary school teacher has been arrested on charges of sexually abusing eight students.
Matthew Schlegel, 44, was taken into custody Thursday morning at his home in Severna Park. He faces more than 30 charges, ranging from second-degree assault to sex abuse of a minor. Schlegel is a third-grade math teacher at Severna Park Elementary school.
According to charging documents, all of the alleged victims are current or former students of Schlegel, and the alleged abuse occurred in the classroom.
Treatment center strives to help thousands
Substance use disorder is an ongoing issue across the nation, including right here in the Commonwealth.
This disorder not only takes an active toll on the user, but those surrounded by them.
6 News spoke to an official from a western PA based treatment center who says help is available.
According to aStates Drug Enforcement Administration Report, almost 300,000 Pennsylvanians had an active substance use disorder this past year.
“We definitely have been seeing numbers continue to increase and you know almost 300,000 people in the past year is a result of a lot of things coming together,” said Brooke McKenzie, the Chief of clinical care services with Dreamlife Recovery.
Bedford County home, garden and lifestyle show returns
BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — After a year-long hiatus because of the pandemic the annual Bedford County Home, Garden and Lifestyle show is back this weekend at the Bedford County fairgrounds. New this year the trade show will be adding an outdoors segment.
The trade show starts Saturday at 9am and will wrap up for the day at 5pm and on Sunday it opens at 11am and ends at 4pm.
Mother sues school district after losing two children in Illinois bus crash
RUSHVILLE, Ill. (WICS) — A parent who lost two of her children in a deadly Illinois crash is suing the school district.
Sarah Miller is the mother of Maria and Andrew Miller, two preschoolers who lost their lives following the crash. According to court documents, she’s suing the Schuyler Industry Community School District.
In March, Schuyler County bus driver Angela Spiker picked up three children on the way to afternoon preschool instruction.
Video shows road rage incident before trooper fatally shoots man in Washington state
EVERETT, Wash. (KOMO) — A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper shot and killeda man armed with a hammer who was involved in a “road rage incident," according to authorities. The Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) said troopers responded to the road rage incident on the shoulder of Interstate 5 near Marine View Drive in Everett just after 4 p.m. Thursday.
SMART spokesperson Courtney O'Keefe said the man had rammed a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) contractor vehicle and a lift that was on the shoulder of the highway.
West Decatur couple charged after overdosing at Blair Co. Sheetz
Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Altoona Police Department say a Clearfield County couple is facing child endangerment charges after they reportedly overdosed at a Blair County Sheetz over the weekend.
Police say officers were dispatched to the store along East 25th Ave. around 8 p.m. Friday night for a report of an unconscious individual.
Investigators say the unconscious male, identified as 30-year-old Jeffrey Hankerson II, was found lying on the floor of the store.
Womb transplant will allow trans woman to become pregnant, surgeon claims
NEW DELHI, India (TND) — A surgeon in India is planning to attempt a womb transplant into a biologically male trans woman, a first-of-its-kind procedure that, if conducted as planned, will enable the patient to become pregnant.
Dr. Narendra Kaushik runs a gender reassignment clinic in New Delhi, India, according to DailyMail.com. He reportedly claims to be "very, very optimistic" that his transplant procedure can be successful.
