Local VA Medical Center hosts campaign highlighting women in the military
ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — The James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center is hosting an event this Saturday featuring women who've served and broken barriers in the military.
“It's called 'I am not Invisible,' and what it is, is a photo shoot where we highlight our women veterans and begin a conversation about them,” says VA Medical Center stakeholder relations chief Shaun Shenk.
Saturday, a large section of wall in the hospital will be filled with pictures and stories, all about women and their service and sacrifices for our country.
Penguins to co-host league's first ever Pride game
Pittsburgh, Pa (WJAC) — The Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres will co-host the NHL's first ever Pride Game on Saturday, April 17th at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, according to a team release.
The game will be nationally televised on NBC and puck drop is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Officials say the game will aim to bring together two cities to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities by sharing stories of inclusion, hope and ally-ship.
Tornado pushes through Portage, severely damaging FedEx facility and local properties
PORTAGE, Mich. — A FedEx facility was severely damaged after a tornado ripped through Portage Tuesday evening.
Photos and videos show a substantial amount of the building, located on Portage Road near Ramona Avenue, is severely damaged, including a caved-in roof and flooding.
At this time, all employees have been accounted for, and no casualties have been reported, according to the City of Portage. Following Tuesday's storms, Fedex officials issued the following statement:

Israeli officials seize AP equipment, take down live shot of northern Gaza citing new law
JERUSALEM (AP) — The U.S. on Tuesday privately urged the Israeli prime minister's office to return equipment seized from The Associated Press and to reverse its block on broadcasting images of the war-torn Gaza strip from inside Israel, according to a senior U.S. administration official. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
Israeli officials seized a camera and broadcasting equipment belonging to The Associated Press in southern Israel on Tuesday, accusing the news organization of violating the country’s new ban on Al Jazeera.
New play place for families is opening in the Galleria
RICHLAND TOWNSHIP - The Hogue's Fun Factory is opening its doors this weekend inside the Galleria.
The play place is located on the second level of the mall next to Sears.
"We were looking for a place for customers to bring their kids to a safe place to play," said Chris Hogue, co-owner of Hogue's Fun Factory.
There are two parts to the new facility - a 20-game arcade and bounce houses in the back room.
Record-setting temperatures forecast in Texas as scorching heat wave continues to bake US
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The summer of 2023 may be drawing to a close — but the extreme heat is not: More record-shattering temperatures — this time across Texas — are expected Saturday and Sunday as the U.S. continues to bake.
Highs of 109 degrees Fahrenheit (42.8 degrees Celsius) forecast for Saturday and 110 F (43.3 C) on Sunday in Dallas would break the current record of 107 F (41.7 C) each day, both set in 2011, and would come after a high of 109 F (42.
Small earthquake in eastern Pennsylvania causes no damage
WYOMISSING HILLS, Pa. (AP) — Federal officials say a small earthquake in eastern Pennsylvania didn't cause any damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the 1.6 magnitude quake occurred around 10:50 p.m. Sunday near Wyomissing Hills in Berks County.
Several residents reported hearing a loud boom and said the quake shook bookshelves and caused their doors to briefly rattle.
Officials say earthquakes with a magnitude between 1.0 and 3.0 aren't typically felt by residents.
Sykesville Ag & Youth Fair underway
SYKESVILLE - The 2017 Sykesville Ag & Youth Fair kicked off Monday.
Wednesday's events included the horse show, where riders participating in the Pleasure Pairs had to match their horses' stride.
Officials said about 45 riders are competing.
Fairgoers can find the winners of each contest, including the vegetables, quilts, baked goods, flowers and arts and crafts, in the Grange Building all week.
