A church in Pennsylvania was shaken Sunday when a man allegedly pulled a gun on the pastor during a sermon and attempted to shoot him, according to authorities.

The incident happened shortly after 1 p.m. at Jesus Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Police identified Bernard Junior Polite, 26, as the suspected shooter who entered the church and attempted to shoot Pastor Glenn Germany as he was delivering his sermon during a live stream.

Video of the sermon shows Germany speaking as Polite comes into the frame and points a gun at the pastor before church members take action and tackle the suspected shooter.

Police said Polite pointed the gun at the pastor and attempted to shoot but the gun failed to discharge.

"A congregation member took immediate action by grabbing onto Polite," police noted in a news release. "The member and the pastor were able to subdue and disarm Polite."

Germany told WTAE that Polite smiled at him before the attempted attack.

I started to begin to preach, and all of a sudden, from my left-hand side, I saw him move from the back to the front of the church, and he set up in the front corner of the church and smiled at me," Germany said.

Police added Polite was held at the church until troopers arrived.

Pastor Germany later posted a video to his Facebook page discussing the frightening incident and saying it is presumed Polite killed his cousin in his home before going to the church.

Right at this minute, the guy who actually came in the church to do the shooting, there are police at his house right now," Germany said. "His house has yellow tape. I was told that a body was found in there dead, so it's presumed that he actually came down after he did the shooting at his house, he came down to the church and he said that he was possessed by spirits. He said that it was spirits talking to him; it was spirits that told him to come and shoot inside the church.

The Allegheny County Police Department confirmed to The National Desk that Polite is a suspect in the deadly shooting and "is known to live at the residence where the shooting occurred and is a relative of the shooting victim."

"At 8:15 pm on May 5, County 911 was notified of a male shot in the 500 block of Stokes Avenue in North Braddock," police said. "First responders found an adult male, later identified as 56-year-old Derek Polite, deceased inside the residence."

Allegheny County police added no charges have been filed in connection to the homicide and it remains an active investigation.

Pennsylvania State Police said they have filed charges against Polite for attempting to shoot the pastor but the details have not been released.
