6 News is learning more after state police say a high-speed chase in Indiana County ended with the suspect being shot and killed.
Channel 6 spoke with a Pennsylvania State Police Trooper who gave as much information as he says he could as this shooting remains under investigation.
“We have an ongoing investigation right now,” said Trooper Clifford Greenfield, a PIO with Pennsylvania State Police.
Trooper Greenfield spoke with Channel 6 on the deadly incident that occurred late Sunday evening in Indiana County.
“So, last night at about 11:55 pm one of our troopers was on patrol, operating a marked patrol unit and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in center township,” said Trooper Greenfield.
However, Trooper Greenfield added that traffic stop quickly turned into a pursuit when the suspect fled from the Trooper.
“In the course of that pursuit, other Troopers who were on duty at the time responded to assist,” Trooper Greenfield said.
Trooper Greenfield said the pursuit traveled various roads in Center Township and Homer City Borough – and lasted several minutes before Troopers deployed hollow spike strips to deflate the suspects tires.
“It’s our understanding that, or our belief that two of the tires on the suspect vehicle were punctured," said Trooper Greenfield. "Unfortunately, the suspect continued to drive and flee from the Troopers.”
Trooper Greenfield says the pursuit then continued on State Route 119 near Tide Road, “At that time, the Troopers encountered the suspect and there was an officer involved shooting," and that’s when Troopers on scene went to provide assistance to the suspect, but “Unfortunately he was succumbed to his injuries at the scene.”
Following this incident, Trooper Greenfield says the Indiana County District Attorney and Coroner continue to work with Pennsylvania State Police as this investigation continues.
“The Troopers who were involved as per our protocol will be placed on administrative duty until the investigation is complete,” added Trooper Greenfield.
Trooper Greenfield says the suspects identity will be released when his next of kin is notified.
