New details have been released on a fire in Johnstown that sent one person to the hospital in Cambria County Thursday evening.
The fire broke out at a home on the 100 block of Clarion Street in Westmont around 6 p.m.
West Hills Fire Chief Kevin Schrock said that, when he arrived on scene, he was able to confirm there was heavy smoke and that a woman was trapped in her first floor apartment.
Schrock said crews were able to locate her and get her outside, where she was then transported to the hospital.
He also said the fire marshal was called in and ruled the fire to be accidental and that it appears to be electrical in nature, and that it seems to have started in the rear of the first floor.
Crews were on scene for hours in the snow and cold temperatures and say they are glad there are resources available to help them.
CamTran also sent a bus to the scene as a resource to keep first responders warm.
Schrock said, “It does become a challenge, and when you’re out there for those long periods of time, there’s a mental wear on you. But, again, those services that are provided by Box 11, CamTran if needed, those are great resources for us, and those resources give us the ability to take a break from those conditions and rehab ourselves, because we have a job to do and we need to be able to continue to do that.”
Schrock also said his department uses chains on their tires to get into places that are not plowed and keep water circulating in the apparatus so it doesn't freeze.
